Marais Des Cynges Wildlife Area
Unit B Restoration

PURPOSE:
To restore wetland plant communities and management capabilities of the primary sanctuary within the Marais des Cygnes Wildlife Area. The project will be accomplished by constructing a cross levee bisecting a remnant lake bed known as Unit B. Precision on water level control will be enhanced by replacing old structures. Stump removal will allow rotation of crops with moist soil vegetation to provide dependable food resources for waterfowl. Lastly, a pump station will be installed on Marais des Cygnes River to assure fall flooding of each subunit created by the new levee. This project will provide unique habitat for wetland-dependant birds, amphibians and reptiles. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will manage the project to provide high-quality sanctuary for migrating waterfowl and other wetland species.
