Lacassine NWR
Unit B - Enhancement
Restoration Strategy: To enhance 860 acres of prime waterfowl habitat on Lacassine NWR through fabrication and installation of irrigation pumping system. Currently, Unit B is managed intensively as a cooperative farm unit to provide winter forage for waterfowl through a combination of agricultural crops and moist-soil plants. The entire 860-acre unit is irrigated by a single low-lift pump system, which draws water from the Mermentau River. The new irrigation system will replace the existing pump and install additional irrigation pipe and vales to efficiently flood and remove water from the management unit. Adequate water control will improve habitat conditions for migratory birds (including wading birds, shorebirds, ducks and geese) by providing optimal water levels throughout the year. Mallard, pintail, gadwall, and American wigeon, as well as both green-winged and blue-winged teal will benefit from this enhancement project. The USFWS will manage the area to maintain moist-soil vegetation for wintering waterfowl. Limited youth and adult waterfowl hunts will be implemented within the project area to provide a quality duck hunt for those who may not otherwise be able to enjoy a waterfowl hunting experience.
