Construction Opportunities
Since 1937, Ducks Unlimited, the worldwide leader in wetlands conservation, has been restoring degraded and destroyed wetland habitat throughout the United States and Canada. Recreating the ecologic and hydrologic function of wetlands that have been destroyed by man is complicated business requiring broad biological and engineering expertise.
The Southern Regional Office (SRO), located in Ridgeland, MS was established in 1990 to protect and restore wetlands and other wildlife habitat in the southeastern United States. Today, the SRO carries out conservation programs in 15 southern states that include some of the most important wintering habitat on the continent. More than one million acres of waterfowl habitat has been conserved from Kansas south to Texas, east to Florida, and north to the Carolinas.
Our typical restoration projects start with a site visit from a DU engineer and biologist. The biologist will look at the site and the species use and recommend such things as water depths, management schemes, and habitat needs. At this point, Ducks Unlimited's engineers and professional surveyors take over. Detailed elevation data are collected using satellite-based, GPS surveying devices that measure surface elevations and spatial locations to the tenth of an inch. The surveyor's data is then transformed into sophisticated mathematical models that predict water movement on the project area. Plans are then engineered and drafted detailing the work, materials, and equipment required to complete the restoration.
With the plans completed, Ducks Unlimited’s engineering staff will hire and oversee local and regional contractors who bring in their heavy equipment to complete the restoration project. Not only do the ducks get their homes back, but Ducks Unlimited also provides economic stimulus to local communities by hiring local company's to do the work.
