LOWER HATCHIE NWR
Moist-Soil Wetlands
Purpose: To enhance 524 acres of moist-soil habitat and flooded
agricultural crops on Lower Hatchie NWR through construction of 2.1 miles of
levees and installation of 21 water control structures. The area previously
consisted of bottomland hardwood forests, but was cleared for agricultural production.
The project will increase management capabilities on Lower Hatchie NWR and provide
foraging habitat for mallards, gadwall, pintails, green-winged teal, and shovelers.
The area is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to provide quality
wintering habitat for waterfowl.
Location: The project is located adjacent to the Mississippi
River in Lauderdale County approximately 22 miles northwest of Covington, TN.
