KYKER BOTTOMS REFUGE
Wetlands Enhancement
Purpose: To restore 126 acres of moist-soil habitat on Kyker
Bottoms through construction of levees and installation of several water control
structures, thus creating 6 independent management units. In addition, a pump
was installed to provide a dependable source of water during fall migration.
The objective was to create moist-soil impoundments near Tellico Lake, because
shallow wetlands are rare in this region. During periods of heavy precipitation,
the site floods and attracts large concentrations of mallards and black ducks.
The area is managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to provide quality
wintering habitat for waterfowl.
Location: The project is located in Blount County approximately
19 miles east of Sweetwater, TN.
Acres Impacted: 126 acres
Habitat Types: Moist-Soil Wetlands
Partners: Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency
Ducks Unlimited, Inc.
Timeline: Construction was completed in July 1998
